Brentford vs. Manchester United results, highlights and analysis as brilliant Bees humiliate Ten Hag’s Red Devils

In its second game, a new era managed to inadvertently reach new lows as Brentford thrashed Manchester United 4-0.
At the Gtech Community Stadium, all of the goals were scored in the opening 35 minutes as Erik ten Hag’s ideal job appeared destined to rapidly turn into an indescribable nightmare.
The only change to the lineup from Sunday’s dull 2-1 loss to Brighton was the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, but Josh Dasilva’s effort in the 10th minute squirmed into the bottom right corner due to a terrible mistake by David de Gea.

From that point forward, Brentford ran amok, mercilessly exposing United’s flaws. Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee, and Bryan Mbeumo all scored more goals to drop United to the bottom of the first-ever Premier League standings.

Ronaldo returned to lead the line for United after missing the preseason trip amid rumours that he intended to leave the team. He tested David Raya with an early shot. Although his fellow countryman at the opposite end demonstrated there may not be such a thing, the Brentford goalkeeper thought it was an easy save.

Throughout the first half, United struggled under the hosts’ pressure, as Ronaldo buckled under the weight of Christian Norgaard and Jansen, the latter of whom fed Dasilva. The offensive midfielder’s strike was accurate but lacked the fury to justify De Gea allowing it to slip through his gloves. He was buoyed by scoring Brentford’s late equaliser at Leicester last weekend.

Ten Hag wants United to start their offences from the back, but in the 18th minute, that strategy backfired horribly. Before the goalie handed the ball to Christian Eriksen, De Gea and Lisandro Martinez exchanged glances. The Danish playmaker had his pocket picked by Jansen on his return to the field where he delighted in his return to football last season, and the forward coolly finished the play.

Martinez, a little defender for Brentford, was replaced at halfway after Mee forced him out of the way so that he could score on his debut from close range.

As Brentford sprinted forward on the break, number four brought the house down. The outstanding Mbeumo produced a finish to match the exquisite pass sent across the field by Ivan Toney.

Early in the second half, Ronaldo had a few opportunities to score from crosses by Diogo Dalot, but Brentford was content to control and handle the situation. There was nothing else they needed to do. For Ten Hag’s mob, mastery of such fundamentals seems like a pipe dream right now.

How Manchester United was overrun by Brentford

Each score in this crazy region of west London appeared to emphasise the strengths of Brentford and the weaknesses of United. De Gea has been involved in some dreadful losses in recent years for every time he has spared United from worse problems. Although he shouldn’t take whole responsibility, there was absolutely no justification for his involvement in the first goal, and frequent viewers won’t be surprised in the least by his slow footwork with the ball at his feet during Jensen’s goal.

But the pressuring that first defeated Ronaldo and later Eriksen was a trademark of Brentford’s strategy, which expertly combined intellect and muscle.

Over the course of the game, Brentford’s players travelled about 14 kilometres more than their opponents did, and when they weren’t mowing down United in the air, they were eating up the ground in front of them. Mee’s goal came as no surprise other than the fact that Bees’ set pieces took 30 minutes to produce results. The fourth will be remembered in this area for many years to come and once more demonstrated how ruthless and driven Brentford is in comparison to its rivals.
