Alaska's special U.S. House election is won by Mary Peltola.
The remainder of late Congressman Don Young's term will be filled by Democrat Mary Peltola, who defeated Republican Sarah Palin in the race.
After the votes were counted, Peltola told supporters at an office in downtown Anchorage, "I feel like I need to catch my breath for a minute."
The first Alaska Native to serve in Congress will be Peltola, who outperformed Palin by three percentage points.
Peltola declared, "I will hold that distinction." But I believe that being an Alaskan and being sent to represent all Alaskans is what's most significant.
Additionally, Peltola will be the first woman to hold the lone U.S. House seat in Alaska.
Palin received 48.5% of the vote, while Peltola received 51.5%.
